How to choose the best keyboard for typing

Comfortability

When talking about the best keyboards for typing, the number one thing on your list of priorities should be comfortability. There is no point in looking fancy, or a feature-rich keyboard if, after a few hours of typing, your hands and wrists hurt.

Compatibility

If you cannot use the keyboard along with your computer, because they aren’t compatible, it is just like you don’t have it at all. For that reason, check the specifications before the purchase, and be sure that your brand new “baby” will work with the rest of your hardware.

Backlighting

Although backlighting might not be so important for many, fact is, if you commonly work in the dark or dimmed space, the existence of this feature is of the highest priority. Therefore, depending on your habits and preferences, don’t forget about this little detail.

Best Keyboards for Typing

Microsoft Keyboard (LXM-00001)

A Comfortable Keyboard Convenient for Everyday Work

microsoft ergonomic keyboard (lxm-00001)
If you are after a decent-quality keyboard, built by a familiar brand, in the way to offer enough comfort for your wrists and hands, Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard (LXM-00001) might be a good option for you.

However, don’t get confused and think that this is the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard, or the Surface Ergonomic, because it isn’t. Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard does deliver fairly decent reliability, practicality, and ergonomics, but is more budget-friendly.

It comes fitted with a palm rest, it offers wired USB2.0 connectivity and has some very neat features such as Office 365 dedicated keys, media controls, emojis, built-in shortcuts, and much more. Unfortunately, many of these features are available only if you have Windows 10 on your computer; other Operating Systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are just partially supported, while Linux, Mac, etc. aren’t supported at all.

In other words, for the price, this is one of the best keyboards for typing there is. Of course, this only goes if you use Windows 10. For everyone else, there are just better opportunities out there.

Pros:

  • Comfortable
  • Ergonomically built
  • Built-in shortcuts
  • Palm rest
  • Quiet
Cons:

  • It is fully supported only in Windows 10

Razer Pro Type

Productivity King

Razer Pro Type
The Razer Pro Type is a productivity oriented wireless mechanical keyboard with fully programmable keys and switches rated at 80 million keystrokes. Basically, if you’re looking for a no-frills mechanical keyboard, built as a tank and manufactured by a reputable company, the Pro Type has your name on it.

Retailing for a little bit over $100, this is arguably one of the best productivity focused mechanical keyboards on the market, and it’s worth mentioning that it shares its internal components with Razer’s famous Huntsman, but with a few tweaks.

There’s no Chroma lighting in the Pro Type, nor 2.4 Ghz wireless support, but the gaming comforts are still there, which means this keyboard can be easily used in between working sessions, making for the best of both worlds. To make it simple for our readers, the Razer Pro Type has all the comforts and features of a gaming keyboard, but has a classical/office design that will not distract you or people around you.

The 104 keys keyboard features single zone white lighting, with adjustable brightness, and the keycaps have a fantastic soft-touch coating, which makes typing a pleasure. The mechanical switches are a little bit noisier than membrane keyboards, but they’re more durable and satisfying, and their clicking feel accompanied by the long travel make for a highly satisfying typing experience.

By the way, the Razer Pro Type uses tactile Orange switches, which require a stronger press than other Razer keyboards, but that translates into less typos once you get accustomed to it. Also, the keyboards support Synapse, Razer’s configuration software, which means you can create custom profiles with remapped layouts for specific applications, a feature that’s only found in premium productivity keyboards and all gaming keyboards.

Bottom line, if you’re looking for a no-nonsense wireless mechanical keyboard built on the “DNA” of a great gaming keyboard, yet designed for office tasks, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Pros:

  • Premium look and feel
  • Razer Orange switches
  • Syncs to 4 devices at once
  • Excellent build quality
  • Superb typing experience
  • Gaming ready
Cons:

  • Battery life is not the best

Logitech K780 is a well built, full-size keyboard, with a lightweight construction that, on the other hand, doesn’t affect its durability in any way. Moreover, this device is fitted with Bluetooth and wireless USB connectivity, as well as the PerfectStroke key system that drastically reduces noisy operations and makes this keyboard one of the more silent ones out there.

Keychron K2

Spectacular Wireless Mechanical Keyboard

Keychron K2
The Keychron K2 is an incredibly well built wireless/Bluetooth mechanical keyboard which makes for a great first-buy if you’re looking to enter the world of fast typing. Its sleek and minimalist design is very different from the bulky mechanical keyboards you may be accustomed with, and for way less than $100 you’ll get a 84-key keyboard with function keys, white backlight, Mac/Windows compatibility, Gateron Brown Switches, and a unique Mac layout, if you’re into that kind of gear.

That means you’ll have function keys with Mac legends, plus you can connect the keyboard to up to three devices via Bluetooth, or use it in wired mode with the provided USB C cable, which is kind of cool.

Moreover, you can switch between Android, Windows and Mac/iOS on the fly via the side switches, and you also get 2 angles with the kickstand. Build quality is solid, as the keyboard is plenty heavy and substantial, and it feels like it will last you forever. Speaking of which, the keys are designed to last for 50 million strokes, and the good news is that you can always replace keys easily if you have to, as the keyboard comes with a keycap remover included in the retail package, as well as a few extra key caps, just in case.

Performance wise, the keys are responsive, with a nice smooth texture, and typing is quick and comfortable. Bottom line is, if you’re looking for a true wireless mechanical keyboard which works great on Macs, the K2 makes for an appealing option.

Pros:

  • Solid build quality
  • Minimalist design
  • Hot swappable switches
  • Mac and Windows compatible
  • Wireless or wired operation
Cons:

How to Choose the Best Wrist Rest

Comfort and Support

Comfort and support are definitely the most important aspects of wrist rest. This accessory can be attractive looking, have a non-slippery bottom or have some sort of ventilation that will help your hands stay dry. However, what is the point of the product, if it doesn’t perform its primary role?

How to Choose the Best Gaming Keypad

Finding the best gaming keypad may present an issue for many; however, a couple of instructions on what to look for may prove to be vital for the search and help you find the best fit in no time.

Mechanical Keypad

If you want the premium gaming experience, a mechanical keypad should be one of your priorities. Yes, it is more expensive than the membrane-based ones, but it also provides much better feedback and swift action that may not be crucial for your successful gaming, but can surely make the whole gaming journey much more fun and interactive. Therefore, if your budget allows it, always go for mechanical switches and get the best gaming keypad experience possible.

Macro keys

Ability to program your keys and allow them to conduct complicated actions with just one press of a button is essential for today’s successful gaming. For that reason, it is very important that your desired device provides as many of these keys as possible, so it can be a great asset for long MMO battles.

Backlit Illumination

Although it might not seem as important, the fact is that quality illumination with support for a variety of colors may play a major role in the gaming front lines. Ability to customize the color of your switches and make them easier to notice may give you that split-second advantage and make a difference between winning and losing. Thus, if it is possible, always go for backlit illumination and give yourself that much-needed game advantage.

Delux T9

A Basic Gaming Keypad Dedicated to the Not-too-Demanding Users

delux t9
Finding a functional, but not too expensive keypad is what most gamers want. However, low price usually means that some of the more prominent features have to go, and Delux T9 is no exception to that rule.

Although it offers 46 keys, which is quite a large number, they are all membrane-based, not mechanical. Also, none of the keys is programmable, which drastically reduces the overall value of this keypad. Nevertheless, its ergonomic design, decent build quality and modest, but still existing LED backlight, with three pre-defined profiles, improve the overall image a little bit.

In other words, Delux T9 offers a lot of basic stuff for a reasonable price, which is more than enough for many. However, if you are after a premium product, with numerous advanced features, this keypad just isn’t for you and you would need to find the best gaming keypad somewhere else.

Pros:

  • A large number of keys
  • Cheap
Cons:

  • A bit too large
  • No programmable keys

In today’s article will help you navigate the murky waters of choosing the best vertical mouse. Why vertical mice, you asked?

Well, we’re not really sure, but since these things exist, someone has to buy them, right? Kidding aside, choosing the best vertical mouse out there has the potential to change one’s life for the better; the thing is, despite their weird appearance, vertical mice are increasingly common both at home and in the workplace, as they’re designed to keep your wrist and forearm more relaxed, i.e. in a natural position.

Also considered an ergonomic mouse, this type of gadget is a must-have item for people who spend a long time arguing on Reddit and 4Chan; the point being, if you’re an obsessive-compulsive mouse user, you may suffer from carpal tunnel injuries, and the best way to reduce strain/pressure on the fragile muscles of the wrist, fingers and forearm is to go ergonomic. Or vertical. Or both. Or even go for a strange looking trackball mouse. The possibilities are endless.

How to Choose the Best Vertical Mouse

The first rule of fight club is: if you’re spending countless hours on your computer every day and wrist pain has become the new normal (think along the lines of repetitive strain injuries), you must go buy a vertical mouse ASAP.

Here’s what to look after in a high-quality vertical mouse: first, there’s the ergonomic index thing. Basically, you can simply look for the highest one available and ignore literally everything else. However, this may not work, because we don’t have (yet) an objective standard with regard to ergonomicness (yes, I’ve just made up that word); as in, different things work for different people, and that’s the rule of the land since like forever.

Vertical mice are designed to reduce wrist movement, as bending your wrist also bends the channels through which your nerves run. That’s why people with carpal tunnel syndrome wear braces by the way, and vertical mice are designed to be literal braces for your wrist, i.e. they help with keeping it straight.

Consider whatever vertical mouse of your liking, and if it’s shaped correctly and large enough for your hands, it should fit the bill. Ideally speaking, a “test drive” would be great before going on a buying spree. Obviously, that would require a visit to your local brick-and-mortar store that sells computer peripherals (Walmart, Staples or whatever); if you’re too lazy for that, don’t worry, you can buy it online and return it if you’re not happy with your “blind date”.

When it comes to mice, there’s always the wired vs wireless mouse conundrum, and after all’s said and done, it’s up to you to decide what you want, as the differences in overall performance are minimal between the two varieties. Since vertical mice are not the best option for gaming, precision/latency and things of that nature are not a real issue.

The same goes for optical vs laser sensors, as most people are incapable of noticing any difference between the two.

Now, if you’re working in a “high precision environment”, i.e. if you’re a designer or a graphic artist, check out the DPI thing just in case and remember that laser mice work great anywhere, while optical sensors prefer non-glossy surfaces.

Finally, look at the number of programmable buttons, provided you require such a thing and let’s move on to the meat of the story and take a look at the best vertical mice as per today.

Best Vertical Mice

Logitech MX Vertical Wireless Mouse

The Best Vertical Mouse for Gaming

logitech mx vertical wireless mouse
As usual, we’ll begin with a product brought to us by the father of computer peripherals, the Logitech MX Vertical wireless mouse respectively. As far as we know, Logitech’s take on the vertical mouse is one of the best on the market, and yes, we’re talking about the MX vertical here. On top of that, you get wireless connectivity, which means this baby is as good as it gets.

The point being, if you like the vertical format in a mouse and you can live with the price tag, this Logitech MX beast is hard to beat: it’s large enough to accommodate the biggest programmer hand out there, you get an “on the fly” sensitivity adjuster button on the top edge, while overall, the MX delivers a smooth and comfortable experience once you get the hang of it. The most important thing about this mouse is that it really feels natural to hold, even if it doesn’t look very comfy.

The build quality is solid, as usual from Logitech, even if the overall feeling is kind of plasticky. The scroll wheel is rubberized and the DPI button allows you to customize sensitivity between 400 and 4000 DPI. Be advised: the mouse requires BT 4.0 to work in Bluetooth mode, otherwise you’re “stuck” with USB/dongle connectivity.

Pros:

  • feels incredibly natural
  • well designed
  • intelligent wireless features
  • robust software bundle
  • textured thumb rest
  • great “vertical-mouse” concept
  • solid build quality
  • built-in battery with 4 months autonomy on a single charge
  • adjustable on-the-fly DPI button
  • plenty connection options including Bluetooth and USB Type C
  • bulky shape (it’s love it/hate it thing, we love it)
  • cross computer control capability via Logitech Flow software
Cons:

  • kind of pricey
  • no slot for USB dongle (wireless receiver)

Anker 2.4G Wireless Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse

The Best Budget Wireless Vertical Mouse

anker 2 4g wireless vertical ergonomic optical mouse
Anker is another big name in the vertical/ergonomic mice industry, but, unlike Logitech, they’re playing on the “easy on the pocket” side of the force. The point being, this wireless/ergo/vertical mouse from Anker is very, but very affordable, all things considered. However, despite its low price tag, Anker 2.4G Wireless Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse has a lot to offer.

First, you’ll get a cool design that looks like a spaceship from the old-school Star Wars series (an imperial interceptor that is). Then, there’s the “adjustable on the fly” DPI setting, which allows you to modify the sensitivity hassle-free, 800/1200/1600 DPI respectively, and that’s more than enough for virtually any non-gaming type of job. Finally, you have 5 solid buttons to play with. However, comfort is the name of the game here, and this mouse is specifically designed to relieve the stress (pressure and/or strain) on your wrists. Needless to say, Anker did a good job in this department, even if you may find this mouse rather difficult to use in the beginning. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it in no time.

Pros:

  • ergonomic design
  • 5 button design plus scroll wheel
  • slides nicely on virtually any surface
  • customizable DPI settings
  • good value for money
  • compatible with all major operating systems, including Linux and Mac OS X
  • intuitive to use right out of the box
  • good autonomy
Cons:

  • feels flimsy, especially the buttons
  • can’t compete with Logitech in terms of accuracy/tracking precision
  • batteries not included
  • stay away if you have small hands

Evoluent VM4R VerticalMouse

The Best Vertical Mouse for Carpal Tunnel

evoluent vm4r verticalmouse
Next in line, we have another rather expensive piece of gear, the Evoluent VM4R VerticalMouse respectively. This wired vertical mouse has already achieved some sort of legendary status among enthusiasts, due to its excellent ergonomic design and top-notch build quality. On top of that, Evoluent developed an interesting software bundle called Evoluent Mouse Manager which basically allows you to customize/program the mouse to meet your specific needs, a feature that is kind of cool if you’re into tinkering with your gear.

But what’s most important is that Evoluent’s vertical form factor will deliver a very comfortable “web browsing” experience all day long, and that’s what it really counts in vertical mice, and we’re talking about the excellently implemented handshake posture, that mimics one’s neutral hand posture, thus relieving stress on your sensitive muscles/nerves.

Pros:

  • excellent ergonomic design
  • cross-platform compatibility: Windows XP, 7, 8 and 10, Mac and Linux Systems
  • Evoluent Mouse Manager really helps a lot with customization
  • 6 buttons
  • plug and play capability
  • great for Mac users
  • allows on the fly DPI settings
Cons:

  • prone to smudging
  • some complaints about long-term reliability
  • doesn’t look or feel premium despite the steep price tag

J-Tech V628

Vertical Joy

j-tech v628
The J-Tech V628 makes for another budget option, as it retails for under thirty bucks and yet it checks all the important boxes we’ve told you about in the preamble of today’s article. First things first, you’ll get a well-designed (in terms of ergonomics obviously) vertical mouse with on-the-fly adjustable sensitivity (600/1000/1600 DPI respectively), and, on top of that, a removable palm rest and even thumb buttons.

The overall design of the J-Tech V628 promotes the glorified neutral “handshake” wrist and arm positions, while the Optical Tracking Technology delivers a smooth tracking experience, making sure the mouse works well on various surfaces.

Pros:

  • well implemented (and rather unique) vertical ‘handshake’ design
  • built to be an endurance mouse (tough as nails)
  • functional and comfortable all day long
  • really works in regard to reducing torsion in the wrist
  • rubber pad included (cushions the wrist)
  • thumb controlled buttons
  • on the fly adjustable DPI (3 levels)
  • great choice for people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome and/or tennis elbow
Cons:

  • right-handed version only
  • not the best choice for gaming

To make a long story short, this baby has it all: a cool vertical handshake design, wireless connectivity via Bluetooth (like, doh) and, on top of that, it’s as silent as a…well, mouse. Also, the Mojo mouse comes with cross-platform compatibility out-of-the-box (as in no drivers required): Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome. There are 6 buttons to take care of each and every task, plus a scroll wheel. One of the main advantages of this “closet-brand” is definitely the price-point, as Jelly Comb retails for under $20, yet it comes with advanced functionality on top of its cool looking vertical design. For example, you’ll get on-the-fly DPI adjustment, 800/1200/1600 DPI respectively, plus optical tracking technology which delivers quite good in the sensitivity department. So, after our previous article about the best budget gaming mouse in the universe, let’s see about the second most important PC peripheral for a gamer running low on cash. Why is a keyboard so important, you asked?

Well, that’s an easy one: if you’re serious about gaming, and we bet you are since you’re reading this article, you must learn that a high-quality gaming keyboard will streamline your gameplay and boost your effectiveness, not to mention that nice feeling of using high end (ok, we’re exaggerating a bit) gear while doing your favorite thing. Also, if you already own a cool gaming rig for which you paid top dollars, or, why not, one of those strange gaming keypads, it would make zero sense to use a bland office keyboard for your binge gaming sessions or anything in between.

How to Choose the Best Budget Gaming Keyboard

That’s the question that drives any respectable gamer: how to make the most of your hard-earned dollars? Don’t worry, you’ve landed in the right place, and here’s TL;DR version: read the whole article. Joke aside, choosing the best budget gaming keyboard is relatively straightforward.

First, you must decide how much you are going to spend on a gaming keyboard: around $50, under $100, you know where this is going. Also consider this: it would make zero sense to pay $100 for a cool keyboard just to play League of Legends occasionally. If you’re not a “pro-gamer”, you won’t need fancy lighting (RGB) and mechanical switches, i.e. you should choose the right tool for the job in the first place.

The next thing to contemplate is membrane vs mechanical switches. The more ambitious gaming keyboards are going full-mechanical nowadays, and obviously, more expensive. However, you may find older-generation gaming keyboards featuring quality mechanical switches for under $100, provided that’s your cup of tea. Generally speaking, proper mechanical switches have a nicer/firmer feel and they’re more reliable than membrane variants. Lower end/cheaper gaming keyboards use mushy plastic membranes instead of mechanical switches, but that’s hardly a deal-breaker if you’re not a maniac.

Just as a fun factoid, you must learn that Germans are God’s chosen engineers, and besides making the best cars in the world, they’re also behind the legendary Cherry MX keys, which incidentally make for the golden standard in the mechanical-switch industry. There are many Cherry MX varieties, but the most popular are Brown, Red and Blue. The reds are soft-touch and quiet, the browns are firmer yet also quiet, while the blues are resistant and clackety.

Mechanical switches aside, you’ll have to choose between two main types of keyboard design: there are generic-looking gaming keyboards, all-purpose models of sorts which look like regular office keyboards, and they’re perfect for RTS, FPS, MOBA or any other action/adventure variety. On the other hand, if you’re into MMO gaming, you should go for an MMO-centric keyboard that’s designed with up to 18 extra-keys for micro-management fanatics. Nota bene: if the space on your desk is severely limited, look for a slim/tenkeyless keyboard, you’ll thank us later.

Next, the fancy lightning factor comes to mind, and here you can choose between one color, full RGB illumination, and none whatsoever. Truth be told, illumination (or the lack thereof) on a gaming keyboard is hardly a deal-breaker in our book, so don’t sweat it too much in this regard. Finally, look for that Gestalt thing, i.e. if you already own a gaming mouse from, say Logitech, it would make sense to buy a Logitech gaming keyboard to match your setup, i.e. there’s a thing called software synchronicity or unified gaming software, and that stands true for big brands like Logitech, SteelSeries or Razer.

With all these in mind, let’s take a look at the best budget gaming keyboards available on the market, in no particular order.

Best Budget Gaming Mice

Logitech G213

The Best Budget Gaming Keyboard Overall

logitech g213
Our first pick for today comes from Logitech. The G213 is a gaming keyboard which delivers advanced gaming-grade performance as it’s part of Logitech’s G Prodigy series. Even if this keyboard is relatively cheap, don’t let the “affordability” to blind you from the truth: the G213 is one of the company’s best sellers and for good reason, as it can be best described as “membrane for the masses” with RGB on top.

Even if you won’t get those glorified Cherry MX mechanical switches, this Logitech keyboard is pretty damn’ good, as it features Logitech ‘Mech-Dome’ switches and dedicated media controls, not to mention the fact that it’s spill-resistant (coffee anyone?) and boasts fully RGB backlit keys. Another thing we like about the G213 is that it weighs almost two pounds. You know that saying: heavy is good, heavy is reliable, if it doesn’t work, you can always hit your opponent with it.

Bottom line, if you’re on a tight budget, the Logitech G213 ticks all the important boxes and makes for a great gaming keyboard.

Pros:

  • amazing value for money
  • impressive gaming performance regardless of the title
  • in-house made hybrid mechanical-membrane key switches
  • spill-resistant
  • well built
  • good design

  • looks solid and it’s also great for typing
  • syncs instantly with other Logitech G gear
  • pretty close to a mechanical keyboard feel-wise
Cons:

  • non-removable braided USB cable
  • huge footprint (you’re going to need a big desk for this one)

HyperX Alloy Core RGB

The Best Gaming Keyboard Under $50

hyperx alloy core rgb
HyperX are known for crafting kick-ass gaming paraphernalia, and their budget Alloy Core RGB stands true to this “standard” of sorts, making for a silent and comfy, not to mention spill-resistant gaming keyboard. Considering the price-point, it’s pretty obvious that you won’t get high-end mechanical switches, as the Alloy Core RGB retails for around “fiddy bucks” give or take, but nevertheless, you’ll get a lot of bang for the proverbial “dolla” asked.

To make it short and sweet, the HyperX Alloy Core RGB features a simple and clean design, and it comes with high-quality membrane keys, but truth be told, one of its main attributes is being very aesthetic. Basically, if you’re a fashion-conscious gamer on a tight budget, the Alloy Core RGB has your name on it, and even when it comes to performance, HyperX didn’t pull any punches with this budget gaming keyboard.

The membrane switches perform dubiously well, being highly responsive and accurate, and as far as entry-level gaming keyboards go, this is one of the best out there.

Pros:

  • comes with anti-ghosting technology and 6 key rollover
  • fantastic design
  • looks and feels premium
  • well built
  • good gaming performance
  • suitable for typing

  • easy to setup (plug and play basically)
  • light and easy to carry around
  • full RGB lighting
Cons:

  • strangely enough there’s no support for HyperX Ngenuity software

Razer Cynosa Chroma

Reliable Low-Profile Gaming Keyboard

razer cynosa chroma
Next in line, we have the Razer Cynosa Chroma, which incidentally makes for the best-selling membrane gaming keyboard in the United States. And yes, that’s one of the reasons for which it made it on our best budget gaming keyboard list. Now, if you’re wondering why Americans are buying this gizmo in massive numbers, here’s a shortlist of reasons: first, it currently retails for about fifty bucks; and yes, we’re talking about a Razer gaming product, which is quite amazing. Next, it comes with individually backlit keys featuring customizable Chroma RGB lighting, along with a spill-resistant design and programmable macro functionality.

Are you sold yet? If not, check this out: the Razer Cynosa Chroma can execute up to 10 commands simultaneously as it features built-in ten-key rollover anti-ghosting. On top of that, the membrane switches support up to 80 million keystrokes, i.e. if durability is important in your book, the Cynosa Chroma has you covered in this regard.

Pros:

  • no-nonsense gaming-grade keyboard
  • has everything a gamer needs
  • features programmable soft cushioned individually RGB lit keys
  • feels and looks more expensive than it is
  • spill-resistant design
  • low profile build
  • Razer Synapse allows you to assign macros, rebind buttons and save profile config files in the cloud

  • good tactile experience
  • amazing value for money

CORSAIR K55 RGB Gaming Keyboard

Cheap Yet Sturdy Keyboard for Gaming

corsair k55 rgb gaming keyboard
Next in line we have another interesting option, this time from Corsair, and yes, we’re talking about a cool looking budget gaming keyboard which currently retails for a tad under $50. To describe it in a few words, the CORSAIR K55 RGB punches way above its weight (in dollars), i.e. it offers features which are literally unexpected considering the price tag. Obviously, since we’re in $50 territory, the K55 RGB uses membrane switches, but they’re well implemented and whisper quiet.

Under the hood, you’ll discover 3 RGB lighting zones (there’s no per-key lighting this time, for cost-cutting reasons), but then again, this innovation is well implemented and the colors have a cool glow and manage to fill up space rather nicely. Despite being made of plastic, the K55 doesn’t feel or look cheap, as it’s sturdy and oozes quality. A nice touch from Corsair is the presence of six MACRO keys located on the left side, which can be programmed to execute/assign macros via the Cue software or even on-the-fly. There’s a dedicated button for that, a recording button respectively, placed at the top, and using it is super-easy.

Pros:

  • well built
  • feels sturdy
  • RGB lighting
  • clean and eye-catching design
  • dedicated MACRO buttons
  • comes with detachable rubberized wrist rest
  • Corsair’s Utility Engine (CUE) software is among the best out there
  • surprisingly good gaming performance
  • amazing value for money
  • ideal entry-level gaming keyboard
Cons:

  • none really at this price

Redragon K556

Cheap Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

redragon k556
With the Redragon K556 we’re entering uncharted territory, i.e. mechanical switches in a gaming keyboard which retails for just a bit over fifty bucks. It’s hard to believe, but the Redragon K556 managed to create a gaming keyboard featuring so-called mechanical brown switches and a high-quality aluminum base, not to mention RGB LED backlighting, at an impossibly low price-point. How did they do it? We have no idea, but at least on paper, the Redragon K556 sounds awesome.

How about real-life? Well, to begin with, the keyboard is pretty heavy and well built, and it’s backed by an 18-month manufacturer’s warranty, hence there are no unpleasant surprises in the workmanship department. The mechanical switches are the Chinese equivalent of the Cherry MX Brown, and truth be told, they’re surprisingly good. Overall, the K556 is a solid gaming keyboard, and offers quite a lot at an incredibly low price. Our advice is: definitely worth trying.

Pros:

  • mechanical switches
  • aluminum base
  • RGB LED lighting
  • 8 spare switches included in the retail box
  • anti-ghosting keys
  • IP 67 certified (read waterproof)
  • 18 backlit modes
  • one hundred percent anti-ghosting
  • adjustable brightness levels and pulsing rate
  • 12 multimedia keys
  • interchangeable WASD/arrow keys
  • all non-conflict keys
  • amazing value for money
  • well built
  • MACRO functionality via proprietary software
Cons:

  • too good to be true (just kidding)

How to Choose the Best Budget Gaming Mouse

Usually speaking, it’s not worth buying cheap gear, because in the end, you’ll end up spending more money on X so-called affordable items (which keep breaking down or fail to satisfy your requirements), instead of buying a high quality (and more expensive) product in the first place. Why? Well, cheap stuff usually breaks down the moment it leaves the store. However, that’s not necessarily the case with technology; due to rapid tech advancements, mass production and all that, tech gear gets cheaper and better year over year with few exceptions.

So, if you’re looking for a proper gaming mouse, the good news for today is that you won’t have to break the bank just yet. Provided you already own a gaming mouse pad (that’s very important if you want to squeeze the last drop of performance from your gaming-grade sensor), let’s focus on the mouse thing for now.

Grip Style

The first thing to wrap your head around is grip style. Why? Well, because based on your grip style, you’ll choose the size and shape of your preferred gaming mouse. Speaking of grip styles, we have the palm grip, which is the most common style among hardcore gamers, the tip grip, when only your fingertips touch the mouse, and the crawl grip, which is highly probable to give you a bad case of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Wired or Wireless

The second thing to contemplate when choosing a gaming mouse is wired versus wireless. Usually speaking, pro-gamers prefer wired mice. Wireless gear looks cool and spares you from mitigating wire-management issues. However, wired mice are more reliable, but also lighter and 100% lag-free compared to their high-tech siblings. Truth be told, there are some high-end wireless mice out there which brag with low/zero latency and zero interference issues, which is hard to believe, but those bad-boys are pretty far from being budget gaming mice, so forget about it.

Optical or Laser

Thirdly, you have 2 types of sensors to choose from: optical and laser. This is a matter of personal preference and tech implementation, i.e. an optical mouse can be better than a laser mouse for one particular person. Weight is also an issue for gamers: the lighter the mouse, the better (at least to some). However, other people prefer heavier gear, so after all, it all goes to personal preference issues.

DPI

How about DPI? Well, to tell you the truth, DPI in a gaming mouse nowadays is the equivalent of horse-power in a racing car. As Enzo Ferrari used to say back in the day, break-horse-power sells cars, torque wins races, if you catch my drift (pun intended). The point being: forget about DPI and focus on things that really matter in the real world: ergonomics, high quality sensors, impeccable workmanship, reliability, how many buttons a given mouse has (a metric that depends on what type of games you’re into i.e. FPS, RTS, MMORPG etc.) and, finally, provided you already have a budget gaming keyboard, take a deep breath, count your money and keep reading about our top budget gaming mice picks in no particular order:

Razer Viper Mini

An Excellent FPS Gaming Mouse

razer viper mini
Razer Viper Mini is a compact and pretty lightweight (85g) gaming mouse that presents a great option for a wide variety of gamers, thanks to its great price and, before anything else, its excellent performance.

Due to its low latency, as well as its great 8500 DPI optical sensor performance and drag-free cable, it is a perfect fit for FPS fans, while it can also be successfully used as a solid MMO gaming option. However, since it has only six programmable buttons, don’t consider it a dedicated MMO mouse.

It is fitted with Optical Switches that use light beam-based actuation and provide great durability, and a high-quality build that places it neck and neck with the best gaming mice out there.

According to its performance, Razer Viper Mini is pretty close to the much more expensive and feature-rich Razer Viper Ultimate. In its class, however, it is the closest to the SteelSeries Rival 3, which is more comfortable and responsive; nevertheless, because of its smaller size, Razer Viper Mini doesn’t offer that level of universality as its SteelSeries rival.

  • Excellent sensor performance

How to Choose the Best Trackball Mouse

When talking about the best trackball mice, there are few features that make the real difference and separate the good from the bad, or at least help you choose which device you should pay your attention to, and which ones you should avoid.

Trackball

Smooth trackball operation is the most important aspect of this type of device since the improper gritty feeling will completely ruin the whole user experience. For that reason, make sure that your desired mouse has that covered.

Also, have in mind that a larger ball means that you will need less rotation for a certain move. Therefore, it is advisable to go for bigger ones. Of course, don’t go into extremes and choose the largest trackball your hand can handle.

Comfort

For the devices such as trackball mice, that are continuously used for long periods of time, it is essential that they provide enough comfort and an ergonomic design for the user. Not just because of the short-lasting discomfort, also because they can cause some serious health issues, mostly considering your wrists.

Buttons

Similar to regular mice, more buttons usually mean better functionality, and the number of programmable buttons, more or less placed for personalization and creation of dedicated commands, can seriously impact your whole user experience and the trackball usability. In other words, although they are not essential, go for the device with as many buttons as possible.

Connection type

When talking about trackball mouse, there are usually three types of connection: wireless (over the USB dongle), Bluetooth and wired one. Of course, the best trackball mouse will usually have more than just one connection type, which will allow for its simultaneous use on multiple devices. Have that in mind and if you own more than one device that can be controlled over the scroll ball mouse, definitely go for a more versatile trackball.

logitech mx ergo wireless trackball mouse

How to Choose the Best Mouse Bungee

Every category of product has its own specifics, and mouse bungees are no exception. These characteristics are what distinguishes the quality product from a bad one:

Base

For the proper behavior of the bungee, it is essential that the device is stable under actionable movement. To assure that, it needs to have a properly made non-slip bottom of the base, as well as enough weight of the base itself.

Size

Compatibility

For that reason, research and read other people’s experiences with certain bungees, and buy only if you are sure it will work with your mouse.

Features

Although most people buy mouse cable holders just for the sake of tangle-free mouse usage and are not bothered by their other features, fact is that these additional functions provide a significant extension to the overall mouse bungee functionality. We know, it sounds sad and redundant, but that’s how life is.

Using a well-designed ergonomic mouse will make all the difference in the world in regard to both comfort and productivity, whether we’re talking about a wireless mouse or a wired variety. Obviously, if you want to enhance the experience even more in terms of comfort for your fingers and wrists, you should also get yourself an ergonomic keyboard. And speaking of ergonomics, a lot of people with CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) swear on vertical mice, but we’ll talk about that a little bit later in the show, right after a short commercial break.

Why Use an Ergonomic Mouse

First, here’s the TL;DR version of why use an ergonomic mouse in the first place: as we’ve already told you in the preamble of the article, using a regular mouse (even a trackball mouse by the way) when doing repetitive tasks all day while immersed in the matrix may result in various 21st century diseases, like repetitive strain injury or repetitive motion syndrome. However, you should know that these matrix-related issues are not actually new, as RMS and RSI go way back to the industrial revolution, when people started to act like robots on proto-assembly lines, doing the exact same moves thousands of times a day.

Today we are confronted with basically the same issue, sans the physical work of the industrial age, whether we’re playing GTA 5 and Candy Crush or doing PowerPoints all day: due to poorly designed (standard) mice, obsessive-compulsive “clickazoids” are suffering from tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and various other things that affect their fingers, wrists and even shoulders. And that’s all due to the unnatural posture related to the unnatural task of staying in front of a screen all day and doing repetitive tasks.

A well designed ergonomic mouse (and keyboard) will not force your forearm, wrists and fingers in an unnatural posture, and that’s all there is to know at this point if you want to mitigate the risks of “job-related injuries”.

How to Choose the Best Ergonomic Mouse

There are hundreds of options out there, which means choosing the best ergonomic mouse may be quite difficult, especially if you’re a total noob. To make things simple, think along the lines of choosing the best gaming mouse, because yes, gaming mice are also ergonomically designed, since gamers are basically doing the same things as “clickazoids”(yes, we made this term up). So here it comes:

Size

Size matters in all aspects of one’s life, i.e. the bigger the better, whether we’re talking about your car, smartphone or TV set. However, when it comes to ergonomic mice, this is a matter of personal preference, i.e. for best results, you’d have to take a test drive with different sized mice to see which one fits perfectly in your hand.

Grip

Grip is correlated with size, i.e. size and grip go together like peas and carrots, as in the ideal size of a given mouse depends on the type of one’s grip. And speaking of grip types, there’s the palm grip, which is the fastest and best for gamers (also comfortable), then the claw grip, and finally the fingertip grip. For more “intel” on “grip issues”, I’d recommend you to check out Razer’s mouse ergonomics guide as well as this YouTube video. As the general rule of thumb, palm-grip mice are best for people with RSI problems, as they put the least amount of stress on your forearm and wrist.

Wireless or Wired?

This is another factor that depends on one’s particular situation. Wireless mice are more expensive, and obviously require batteries (which makes them heavier), while some models may suffer from noticeable lag, an issue which can be particularly annoying in certain tasks. However, if you’re looking for convenience (no cables on your desk) and you don’t care about spending more money, a well-designed high-performance wireless mouse is hard to beat.

Weight

Again, this is a matter of personal preference. However, keep in mind that a heavier mouse requires more effort to move it around, hence on a long enough time-line, a heavier mouse may cause problems long-term, even if the difference in weight is negligible.

DPI

Since we live in the “current year”, adjustable DPI resolution is a must-have feature in an ergonomic mouse. Basically, adjustable DPI means you can adjust the cursor-speed to match your requirements/preference, as some tasks may require a low DPI setting, while others need a higher one. Adjustable DPI is very important if you’re a graphic artist, a gamer, a video editor or all of the above.

Ambidextrous Design

If you’re a “leftie”, you should know that most mice are designed for right-handed people; however, some of the best mice out there feature an ambidextrous design, while very few are specially designed for lefties. If you fall in the latter category, keep your eyes peeled before you buy.

Vertical Design

Here comes the mother lode of clickazoid ergonomics: vertically designed mice. The philosophy behind vertical design is that your hand forms an arch or a contour when it’s at rest. A vertically designed mouse will reproduce that contour, thus allowing you to keep your forearm in a neutral posture, also known as the handshake position. This posture promotes both accuracy and comfort.

Now that we’ve cleared things up, let’s see the contenders for the best ergonomic mouse.

9 Best Ergonomic Mice

Logitech MX Ergo Wireless Trackball Mouse

Amazing Duo

logitech mx ergo wireless trackball mouse
The Logitech MX Ergo is a very interesting beast, as it plays on both ends of the specter, i.e. it’s both an ergonomic mouse and a trackball, with an emphasis on the latter. Logitech MX Vertical Wireless Mouse

The Best Ergonomic Mouse for Wrist Pain

logitech mx vertical wireless mouse
Here comes another vertical wireless mouse, this time from Logitech, the granddaddy of PC peripherals. As usual, when it comes to a Logitech product, the MX Vertical Wireless mouse is over-engineered to the point of ridiculousness, but that’s hardly a surprise, at least for our regular readers. However, unlike the Anker Vertical Wireless ergonomic gizmo we’ve told you about previously, this Logitech is way more expensive, more than 4x actually, and the question is, is it worth it?

Here’s why: as far as vertical mice go, the MX from Logitech is precision crafted to reduce muscle pain by exactly ten percent, and that’s according to Logitech’s own in-house study. Besides top-notch ergonomics, the MX Vertical comes with a strong 4000 DPI sensor and cross-computer control, i.e. you can copy-paste images, text or whatever over 3 computers (simultaneous navigation) using Logitech’s Flow software. And the thing is, you can literally use this mouse on 3 computers in the same time, Mac or Windows machines, as the MX Vertical comes with three ways to connect: Bluetooth, USB Type C (cable included in the retail bundle) or Logitech’s USB Unifying Receiver.

Logitech MX Master 3

Productivity BFF

logitech mx master 3
When it comes to computer peripherals, Logitech is king, and their latest MX Master 3 is arguably one of the best ergonomically designed mice in the universe. We’re only exaggerating a little bit for dramatic effect, but the truth is that the MX Master 3 is the master of ergonomic mice, making for a super-comfy gadget, boasting an electromagnetic (!) scroll wheel which allows precise/freewheeling motion. Everything’s at superlative with the MX Master 3, and its launching raised the bar in the industry, as this baby was specifically designed to enhance comfort and customizability (yes, that word really exists) for its target audience: designers, software developers and other PC-addicted professions.

Design-wise, the MX Master 3 is heavily inspired from the previous MX Master 2s generation, and that’s a good thing, because after all’s said and done, if something ain’t broke, don’t fix it. However, when it comes to “what’s under the hood”, well, here’s a different story, as the Master 3 comes with a redesigned scroll wheel made from machined steel (the electromagnetic thing dubbed MagSpeed), and one flick of this marvelous wheel can scroll through literally thousands of lines. The coders in the audience are smiling, we know, we can feel it, especially when they find out that the MX Master 3 will stay alive for 70 days on a single charge.

Pros:

  • premium look and feel, highly customizable
  • supremely comfy, quiet and smooth scroll wheel
  • can control up to 3 machines simultaneously, including sharing text/files
  • dual connectivity via Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz dongle
  • the best scroll wheel in the “game” (made in Switzerland)
Cons:

  • expensive

ELECOM M-HT1DRBK Wireless Trackball Mouse

Good Choice for Carpal Tunnel

elecom m-ht1drbk wireless trackball mouse
Here comes another trackball beast, this time from Elecom, a wireless and ergonomically designed mouse which looks like it just landed on Amazon from a science fiction movie. To enforce the science-fiction comparison even more, the ELECOM M-HT1DRBK’s bright red track-ball looks just like HAL 9000, the sentient AI from 2001 A Space Odyssey. The point being, as far as mouse design goes, this baby looks and feels awesome. Another peculiar thing about this alien artifact is that it’s almost twice as big as a regular mouse, comes with eight buttons and its ergonomic design works quite well, i.e. the mouse is very comfy provided you don’t have tiny hands.

Another advantage of the ELECOM M-HT1DRBK is that it allows your wrist to maintain a neutral position, i.e. it helps with preventing carpal tunnel syndrome. Furthermore, the mouse is well built and rock solid, while its OMRON switches deliver an excellent tactile response.

We live in a day and age when portability is the name of the game, as “work and travel” has become the new norm. Hence, today’s article is about the best portable monitor, which is an almost must-have item for working professionals looking to make their lives easier while on the go. Who needs such a gadget you asked? After all, we have smartphones, laptops, tablets and all that.

Portable monitors are an excellent choice for engineers, graphic designers, writers, artists and even programmers, to name just a few professions, as they take both portability and high performance to the “next level”, to use gaming parlance. However, portable monitors are more than an expensive whim, as they’re designed to help people do their job more comfortably and more efficiently, and we’re talking about people who generally require big real-estate screens, obviously.

How to Choose the Best Portable Monitor

If you’re trying to boost your productivity, having a second screen i.e. a USB powered portable monitor, would really make all the difference in the world. There are tons of models out there to pick from, so here’s the “how to choose the best portable monitor 101” the short version.

Display

Choosing the best portable monitor is similar to choosing a gaming monitor, and one of the most important “metrics” to look after is the display itself, because that’s where the action is; more precisely, screen resolution. Since we live in the “current year”, look for the highest resolution possible, as in 1080p/Full HD and beyond. It goes without saying that higher res units are a bit more expensive, but it’s not worth compromising resolution and image quality just for saving a few bucks.

And speaking of image quality and resolution, if you’re into heavy gaming while on the go, look out for a G sync monitor (or FreeSync), provided such a beast even exists.

Contrast Ratio

This is an important feature for a portable monitor due to the nature of the job, i.e. you may have to use it for presentations and what not in bright daylight or in very dark environments. You see where this is going, right? Check out if you can easily change the settings, as in dim/brighten the display etc.

Speakers

Speakers would make for a nice feature for your portable monitor, especially if you’re going to pair it with a portable DVD player. Having both image and sound would really impress your audience during a presentation, doesn’t it?

Size

Size is everything, the bigger the better, and that’s true for almost everything in life, ranging from cars to IQs and portable monitors. Depending on the nature of one’s work, you may have to keep it on the down low, but most portable monitors nowadays are 15.6 inches, which is laptop-size stuff, 17.3 inches wide or more (up to 22’’).

Compatibility

Whatever you do, make sure the respective monitor is compatible with your desktop/laptop or whatever device you’re going to pair it with. Also look at software compatibility, Windows, Linux, iOS or whatever you’re using.

Power

Most of the time, portable monitors are powered via the USB cable; if you’re going to use it while traveling, make sure you’re not getting a “gas guzzler”. More precisely, check out the specs and make sure how much power your monitor consumes, a metric that will give you a hint about how quick it will drain the battery from your laptop, power-bank or even smartphone.

Connectivity

Most portable monitors nowadays come with both USB and HDMI ports, which are more than enough in the vast majority of situations. However, depending on your gear, make sure that the portable monitor you’re looking at has all the “holes” required for operating properly. Who knows, maybe you’ll be using it on an older-gen Thinkpad laptop or PC, and may require an old school VGA port to make the most out of it.

Weight

Big is beautiful, but a big monitor can also break your back. Joke aside, if you’re going to carry your portable monitor a lot, go for an “ultra-light variety”, especially if you’re into the “soy latte mochaccino” club, if you catch my drift. Generally speaking, smaller monitors are also lighter and they occupy less space.

With no further ado, let’s take a look at the best portable monitors currently available, and don’t worry, we have picked one for every budget. So, here it comes:

9 Best Portable Monitors

ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC

The Best Portable Monitor for Laptop

asus zenscreen mb16ac
The ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC can be best described as an ultra-portable (8.9 x 0.3 x 14.2 inches) 15.6’’ wide full HD 1080p monitor. As you’ve already guessed it from its dimensions, the Asus ZenScreen is very light and ergonomically designed, weighing a mere 1.7 pounds and being just 0.3 inches slim. In regard to portability and ease of use, it doesn’t get much better than that, but besides having a super-model silhouette, what’s under the hood is what counts, right?

To begin with, this unit comes with a USB Type C port, and image quality is quite good for a portable, though brightness is definitely not its forte. There’s also a cover included in the retail package, that doubles as a stand, and that’s a nice touch from Asus. In real life terms, the Asus ZenScreen is not much larger than an iPad Pro, a thing that makes it ideal as a second screen for your laptop and incredibly comfortable to carry around. The single-port design makes it very “thin and sexy”, and Asus also provides a standard USB adapter along with the cover.

  • light and thin
  • great software bundle
  • works with virtually any laptop
  • nice design

HP Business S14

The Best Portable USB Monitor from HP

hp business s14
Next in line we have the HP Business S14, which, as its name suggests, is everything about workspace growth. This professional portable monitor is relatively small at 14’’, yet it offers a pretty interesting 16:9 format and 5 ms latency GTG at full HD 1080p, which amazingly enough makes it pretty good for gaming. However, considering its small form factor and tiny screen, it’s obvious that the S14 was created to serve as a dual monitor setup, with an emphasis on Starbucks people.

Joking aside, this baby is powered by a state-of-the-art USB Type-C, which allows both power and video signal to pass through at the same time. Just like the Asus before, this portable monitor comes with a cover included in the retail package; provided you have a PhD in architecture, you can transform into a sturdy stand, which is pretty cool ergonomics-wise. Weighing 2.2 pounds and measuring 12.9 x 8.2 x 0.34 inches, the HP Business S14 is light and small enough to fit almost any type of bag, including a laptop carrier.

The display itself is an IPS unit and delivers pretty good images with great color reproduction and has wide viewing angles; for professional types it’s important to mention that the S14 has a matte/anti-glare finish, which is excellent for outdoor use. Bottom line, if you’re a Starbucks creature, the HP Business S14 is going to be your best friend, whether you’re sending emails or watching World Series in style.

Pros:

  • single USB Type C port for better ergonomics
  • excellent for productivity use

  • sturdy stand
  • slick and elegant design
  • anti-glare coating
  • easy to use and to install
  • great as a second monitor
Cons:

  • not the brightest screen in the world

AOC I1659FWUX

Best Bang for the Buck

aoc i1659fwux
AOC’s I1659FWUX portable monitor plays in the “best bang for the buck” category, making for a 15.6’’ IPS full HD 1080p device featuring a built-in stand and VESA-mounting compatibility. As usual, the AOC I1659FWUX comes with a USB Type-C port only, which delivers both power and video signal, and, the cherry on top, the built-in stand is cleverly designed, so it works in both landscape and portrait mode.

But let’s talk a little shop: unlike previous models that lack in terms of brightness, a common “feature” when it comes to portable monitors (it’s related to power-saving), the AOC really “shines” in this regard, as it boasts 220cd/M² of brightness, which is significantly more compared to its direct competitors. And another cool thing is that the AOC will cost you less than an Asus or a HP, which means you’re double-winning at life with this baby. To make a long story short, if you’re looking for one of the best 15.6’’ portable monitors, this AOC should make it on your short list.

Pros:

Best Fight Sticks - Arcade Sticks
If you’re a big fan of arcade games, you’ve landed in the right place, because today we will help you navigate the murky waters of game controllers. As usual, we might add. Speaking of game controllers, we’ve already covered joysticks, PC controllers and racing wheels in previous “episodes”, and since we’ve started today’s piece with fighting games, its pretty obvious that the emphasis of this article will be on how to choose the best fight stick, or arcade stick, whatever parlance you’d like to use in regard to your gaming gear.

The thing about arcade sticks is that they arguably make for the best way to play fighting video-games, as they’re built and designed to be the perfect hardware for this particular genre. Not even the best fight stick in the world will necessarily make you a better player, as they’re no magic wands by any metrics; however, they are clearly superior to game-pads or keyboards for fighting games. Finally, it’s up to you to decide if you’re a fight stick guy, or you’ll “stick” to your gamepad or keyboard.

However, keep in mind that Street Fighter inspired fight sticks are tailor-made for the best virtual fighting experience, and if you’ve ever watched professional E-sports events like East Coast Throwdown, you may have a clue about why pros never use Xbox One or PS4 controllers but fight the good fight with an arcade stick.

Now, if you’ve already decided to go the way of the samurai with a fight stick, keep reading, as we’ll give you the basics on how to choose your gear, and we’ll also provide you with some of the best fight sticks to suit anyone’s budget.

How to Choose an Arcade Stick

There are quite a few options with regard to arcade/fight sticks, whether we’re talking about Qanba, HORI, Mayflash or Razer. Since Mad Catz “has left the building”, HORI is now arguably the best-known arcade stick manufacturer out there. Speaking of budgets, there are $99 or less and over $100 fight sticks. The latter fall in the “premium” category so to speak.

Experience

If your fight-stick experience is very limited or zero, we’d recommend you to buy a cheaper model until you figure things out. Since we’ve been using loosely the words arcade stick and fight stick, you should know that they’re basically the same thing, except the fact that fight sticks are specifically designed for fighting games, especially in terms of joystick responsiveness and button layout.

They’re “fine-tuned” so to speak to deliver more accurate input in order to bring a more realistic gaming experience to your home console. An “arcade-like” experience if you want, as arcade fight games were played back in the day in arcade cabinets, but we are getting nostalgic here.

Compatibility

So, novice players should stick with cheaper fight sticks, that’s rule number one. Rule number two: be careful on how you’re spending your money, as these bad boys are hugely addictive. Besides fighting games, you can use them also for other arcade style video-games, such as Puzzle Fighter, Metal Slug 3 or Ikaruga. So, you should be extra careful on what gaming platforms are you going to use your arcade stick.

Some of them are specifically designed for Xbox, others work exclusively on PlayStation. The good news is that all of them work on PC if you know a bit or two about how to tinker with the drivers.

Size and Weight

Size and weight come to mind next. This is important for a number of reasons: do you have small hands or big hands? Where do you keep the fight stick, on your lap or on the table? If you’re far away from the console, you should also consider cable length, for cable management issues. Size matters, in all these situations. If you have big hands, stay away from extremely small fighting sticks, such as the Hori Fighting Stick Mini 4. On the other hand, there are beasts like Hori Real Arcade Pro 4 Premium VLX KURO out there, and this one’s an absolute unit.

Modding

Finally, there’s the modding and parts thing. If you’re going deep down the arcade rabbit hole, you may want to engage in “modding”, as in to swap the buttons/joystick at some point in the future. Even if it sounds intimidating, modding your fight stick is very easy, once you get the hang of it. Modding is defined as replacing (as in upgrading)original parts of your arcade stick, things like the joystick, actuators, restrictor plates, plexis, Sanwas, boards, bat-tops, different size buttons and so on and so forth.

Replacing them with what, you asked? Well, with “tuning parts”, as in better parts, from brands like Seimitsu or Sanwa. Usually speaking, all is needed for these “complex tasks” is a screwdriver, so don’t sweat it too much, as most arcade/fight sticks are designed to be easily customizable. The golden standard when it comes to “tuning parts” for one’s fight stick is the brand Sanwa Denshi, followed closely by Hori Hayabusa and Seimitsu, so keep that in mind for future upgrades. Also remember that modding your gaming gear usually voids manufacturer’s warranty, but not necessarily.

Razer-made arcade sticks are cool with modding, i.e. Razer is a mod-friendly company (it doesn’t void warranty), as long as you’re not modifying the printed circuit board. As the general rule of thumb, HORI’s RAP models (Real Arcade Pro) are excellent for beginners, as they’re not very expensive, yet they’re built with high-quality parts, hence you won’t feel like modding them right away, thus risking voiding warranty.

On the other hand, the Razer Pantera or Atrox can be modded anytime, without fear of voiding the warranty, but the question is: can you afford them?

Ideally, you should go for a high quality/premium fight stick, provided you’re in it for the long haul, as these bad boys are built with arcade quality components that will last you forever, as they’re designed to support unimaginable levels of abuse. The next level is to buy a custom fight stick, but that’s another story altogether. So, let’s get right into it.

Given so, we’ve put together an easy-to-understand guide that showcases some of the best designs on the market. Still, because our selection was based on several important features, let’s first have a look at how to choose an ultrawide monitor.

How to Choose the Best Ultrawide Monitor

Does the field of view matter to you? Or maybe you’re working with photo and video editing and you need natural colors and extra-crisp images… These are some of the features we’ll discuss below, so make sure to pay attention!

Resolution & Pixel Density

The resolution is the value that shows how crisp the image is going to be. Put plainly, the higher the resolution the more pixels will be on the screen. But before you go ahead and put the best 4k ultrawide monitor in your cart, you should know that past 1440p and 2K, it may be difficult to notice the difference in image quality.

Screen Size

Back in the old days, when you needed more screen real estate, you’d have to buy one or two extra monitors. Nowadays, you just buy one behemoth and you’re done. The standard ultrawide size is 34-inches, but some producers pushed it even further (like Samsung’s 49-inches display).

Now, in order to enjoy the experience, you also need to know that such big screens can only be appreciated from a certain distance.

Design

While the aesthetics of the design is just as important, we’re going to address its efficiency here. Whether your new monitor has a curved screen or not, it will occupy a lot of space on your desk. This is why you should pay attention to the design of the supporting stand and its legs.

Other Features

Features like:

Colors – Most designs are based on sRGB, but designers should consider one on Adobe RGB.

Brightness Levels – Measured in cd/m2, brightness is more of a personal preference nowadays.

LED Backlight – A feature that increases brightness without bringing the energy costs up.

Refresh Rate – Defines how often the image is being refreshed per second and the higher, the better. However, once you move past 144Hz (the popular value for gaming monitors), the perceived improvement in quality drops. Also, you need a GPU that can keep up with the monitor if you want to stay away from ghosting.

Response Time – Measures the speed with which a pixel changes colors and it’s usually 4ms for IPS panels and 1ms for TN ones. Basically, the faster the response, the better the image.

Contrast Ratio – Measures the difference between the whitest white and darkest black the display can produce. However, because most modern monitors come with great contrast ratios, this feature only matters for designers.

Connectivity – A monitor should offer the possibility to connect it with different devices. Thus, it should have several USB ports (preferably 3.0), at least one HDMI and others.

Now, before you decide on which monitor to buy next, you should know how you want to use it. As we already mentioned, some of these features are only important for designers, and the same is valid for gamers or people who need a new office display.

Best Ultrawide Monitors

Alienware AW3420DW

The Best Just Got Better

alienware aw3420dw
Alienware is one of the biggest names in gaming, and their Alienware AW3420DW is arguably the best ultrawide monitor in the world. At $1000, give or take, it doesn’t get any better than the Alienware AW3420DW, and you can take that to the bank!

Basically, this gaming monitor from Dell is definitely worth keeping an eye on (for a rebate) if you’re looking to get the most out of your gaming gear.

And here’s why: its predecessor AW3418DW was one of the best gaming monitors ever, but the new version is better in every way. Just like the AW3418DW, the AW3420DW retains the 34’’ display size, as well as the 21:9 3,440 x 1,440 resolution, but it comes with RGB lighting and ergonomically designed menus.

Aesthetics wise, this is a lovely monitor, and follows Alienware’s Legend design language, boasting a futuristic oval-shaped RGB light ring, plus the familiar RGB decorated alien head on the back. The light show is controlled by Alienware’s Control Center software, and, to make it short, this baby looks fabulous.

When it comes to performance, the monitor has a 120 Hz refresh rate, and everything runs smooth and fluid, due to its 2 ms latency. Picture quality is amazing, and for Nvidia users the good news is that the AW3420DW comes with a G-Sync panel. The ultrawide resolution also comes in handy for productivity-related tasks, i.e. you can fit 2 large browser windows plus Slack sans alt-tabbing.

Pros:

  • Looks like the Mothership
  • Pixel perfect screen
  • IPS Nano Color technology
  • 1900R Curved Display
  • 120 Hz refresh rate
  • 2 ms response time
  • Sturdy construction
Cons:

  • Ludicrously expensive

Asus ROG Strix XG49VQ

Flawed Beast

asus rog strix xg49vq
THe ROG brand is Asus’ response to Dell’s Alienware, and it stands for Republic of Gamers; needless to say, the ROG Strix XG49VQ is a monster of a super-wide monitor, a wild curved beast which is built to deliver a larger-than-life gaming experience. If you’re a die-hard gamer, this is an obligatory item to have in your gaming rig, provided you can afford it and you also have enough space to accommodate it.

The ROG Strix XG49VQ is everything you could wish from a high-end super-wide monitor: 49 inches of pure bliss, with HDR support and a high refresh rate. This is actually the definition of “bigger, better, faster, more”, but be advised: you’ll have to pay through the nose to get your little hands on it.

The curved 32:9 aspect ratio premium LCD panel looks spectacular, comes with FreeSync 2, HDR support, 144 Hz refresh rate and DisplayHDR 400 certification, and the funny thing is that its 3,840 by 1,080 pixels definition is relatively modest considering the immense panel size. However, pixel count is not crucial in a gaming monitor, and considering the target demographic of the ROG Strix XG49VQ, gamers respectively, for whom refresh rate is king, the PPI metric is not a deal-breaker.

Speaking of cutting edge panels, the ROG Strix XG49VQ boasts 450 cd/m2 brightness, 3,0001 static contrast ratio and has an 1800R curvature. Moreover, the VA(vertical alignment) panel is rated at 4 ms latency, gray to gray. Connectivity is assured by a 2x HDMI 2.0 ports and a DisplayPort 1.2 socket, yet, strangely enough, there’s no USB-C port.

Finally, if you want to make the most out of the 144 Hz refresh rate, you should pair this baby to an RTX 2080 GPU, and keep in mind that this is basically a gaming-only device, i.e. it doesn’t shine in terms of productivity or watching videos, (image quality on desktop is so so to be honest) due to modest pixel density and its sheer form-factor i.e. this is by definition a niche product. As long as you understand that, you’ll be alright.

Pros:

  • Excellent gaming features
  • 144 Hz refresh rate
  • Bigger than life
  • VA panel with 450 nits
  • Immersive experience
Cons:

  • Niche product
  • No USB-C
  • Useless for productivity tasks

Dell P3421W

A Versatile Ultra-Wide Monitor from Dell

dell p3421w
Next in line we have another Dell, a vanilla-type (as in non-Alienware) this time. Enter P3421W, another ultra-wide curved monitor, with WQHD resolution, 3800R curvature and 21:9 ratio. Before you ask, that’s 3440 x 1440 pixels resolution @60 Hz, and as many of you gamers already guessed, this is not a “gaming-centric” device.

However, even if you don’t get ultra-high refresh rates, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a game or two, just don’t expect that kind of experience you would have with an Alienware or a ROG. But, if you’re looking for an awesome productivity tool, there you have it: P3421W was specifically built for business purposes and ease of use.

Even the menus aka the user interface is very intuitive and friendly, and you can navigate it via joystick control. Image quality is at superlative due to the high-quality IPS panel, and connectivity is taken care of by a pair of USB 3.2 Gen1, which means you can connect two computers at once and display the content with PbP and PiP (picture by picture/picture in picture) features.

On top of that, you’ll get HDMI, Display port, four USB type C ports, plus a standlock feature, not to mention Dell’s excellent Height/Swivel/Tilt Adjustable support. Pre-set mods are pretty good, especially the ComfortView mode, which works great for protecting your eyes during extended periods of heavy-usage.

Bottom line, if you’re looking for a premium 4K ultra-wide monitor for productivity-oriented tasks, such as word processing, this model should rank high on your shopping list.

Pros:

  • Ultra-wide IPS panel
  • USB-C Ports
  • Virtual KVM switch
  • Ergonomic design
  • Easy to use
  • Solid connectivity
  • Good color accuracy
Cons:

  • No HDR support

The LG 38WN75 is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a “jack of all trades”, or, to put it another way, if you want to mix business with pleasure. As in, this curved ultrawide monitor can do both gaming and productivity related tasks with relative ease.

Also, considering the fact that this is an LG product, i.e. a Samsung wannabe (just kidding), it comes at a relatively affordable price, all things considered. Basically, if you’re not ready to spend a fortune yet you want the best of both worlds, look no further. Speaking of the best ultrawide curved monitor, this LG really does an awesome job in business-related tasks due to its “reading mode”, which makes the display easy on your eyes if you spend a considerable amount of time reading blocks of text.

Also, the virtually borderless design looks absolutely fantastic, while the IPS panel has impressive color accuracy and wide viewing angles. As usual with IPS, sharpness is uniform across the panel, and there’s little to none light-bleeding at all four corners. In Windows 10 systems, text looks very sharp, as well as office applications and browsers.

The OSD menus are intuitive and easily navigable via joystick, color is accurate and vibrant, the display itself is very bright, which makes it suitable in well-lit environments, and the stand is cleverly engineered, allowing you to tinker around with your monitor until you find the perfect position. Finally, if you want to get the most out of your monitor, we would suggest a professional color calibration. Other than that, you’ll definitely love it.

Pros:

  • HDR10 support
  • Tilt and height-adjustable stand
  • Impressive color accuracy
  • Screen split
  • Reading mode
  • Game mode
  • 3-side borderless design
Cons:

  • Lacks FreeSync support
  • No USB-C port

Samsung CH890

Business Oriented Ultrawide Monitor

samsung ch890
It’s time for a Samsung, and we would suggest a 34’’ CH890 Series ultrawide curved monitor, specially designed for business. Featuring WQHD 3440×1440 resolution and 100 Hz refresh rate, this affordable monitor is backed by 3 years warranty and Samsung’s renowned quality and workmanship.

Moreover, the CH890 could also double for a multimedia/gaming monitor due to its solid specs, as in you can play on this baby nonstop, courtesy of its high-quality VA panel with high native contrast and low input lag (4 ms latency). Moreover, you’ll benefit from HDR support, as well as FreeSync 2 support and decent viewing angles for a VA; however, its odd size makes it not so great for small desks.

We must also tell you about the monitor’s beautiful design, and the plethora of connectivity options, including HDMI, DisplayPort, and the latest-gen USB Type-C.

It’s important to mention that, for whatever marketing reason, this is a very underestimated monitor, and works great with Macbooks (unlike other models), plus it features PBP, as in split-screen to support 2 input sources simultaneously.

In terms of bang for the buck, it doesn’t get much better than this, so yeah, the CH890 comes highly recommended.

Pros:

  • Easy to use/navigate
  • Freesync, USB C
  • Beautiful design
  • 100 Hz VA panel
  • Great for multitasking
  • Gaming ready
  • High native contrast
Cons:

  • No G-sync

Acer Nitro XZ342CK

Smooth Operator

acer nitro xz342ck
Once again, we have a gaming monitor for our readers, the Nitro XZ342CK respectively. Nitro is Acer’s gaming division, just like Alienware is for Dell and ROG is for Asus, so the Nitro XZ342CK makes for an affordable gaming monitor that can be used for basically any type of application, i.e. it’s not a niche product like the ROG Strix XG49VQ reviewed previously.

So, for half a grand, give or take, you’ll end up with more than you bargained for, including AMD Radeon FREESYNC technology and a stunning display with 144 Hz refresh rate, 400 cd/m2 brightness (!) plus an outstanding 1 ms latency and 109 ppi pixel density.

We must also mention the VA panel that is capable of covering 98 percent of the sRGB color gamut with true 8-bit color depth. So yeah, in terms of specs, the Nitro XZ342CK is mind-blowing, especially considering the price asked, so, what’s the catch, right?

Well, to tell you the truth, there’s nothing wrong with this gaming monitor, as it’s built to deliver a smooth and responsive gaming experience, due to its high refresh rate and low input lag, and if you take into account the fact that it supports FreeSync, G-Sync and HDR, you’ve got yourself a winner.

Pros:

  • G-Sync/Freesync compatible
  • 144 Hz refresh rate
  • No ghosting
  • No backlight bleed
  • 400 nits of brightness

AOC CU34G2X

The Millennium Falcon of Gaming Monitors

aoc cu34g2x

LG 34GL750-B

An Ultrawide Monitor that Delivers Exceptional Performance

lg 34gl750-b

LG 34GL750-B is another ultrawide monitor that offers plenty of features and excellent performance in one. It is fully G Sync and FreeSync compatible, it offers an image with vibrant and accurate colors and comes even with HDR support. However, this support is only a software one; therefore, your only benefit from this kind of support is that you can display HDR content.

Moreover, this 35” monitor is equipped with a 2560 x 1080 IPS panel; with 144Hz refresh rate and 8-bit color depth, as well as 300nits of brightness. Also, this panel provides a decent contrast ratio of 1000:1, 178° viewing angles and 99% sRGB gamut.

LG 34GL750-B comes with a not-that-great 5ms response time; however, because of its numerous enhancement features such as 1ms Motion Blur Reduction and the already mentioned FreeSync, its performance is free of ghosting. Therefore, even gamers who like fast action titles can fully enjoy their play.

This monitor is fitted with one DisplayPort, two HDMIs and a headphones jack that altogether aren’t much; nevertheless, it is still up to the class standards and more than enough for the most users.

Overall, if you are looking for the best ultrawide monitor and are attracted to fancy, but efficient features, LG 34GL750-B is the perfect choice for you.

Pros:

  • 1ms Motion Blur Reduction
